Vehicle Description

This is a 1968 Road Runner the way it was meant to be — basic and raw. It has a 383 four-barrel and four speed, with the shifter tucked in front of a lightweight black bench seat. Even the air cleaner has an attitude. It’s “unsilenced.” The body is the two-door pillared coupe, which is the initial Road Runner body style. It is the lightest version of the Plymouth B-body. This archetypal Matador Red model has carpeting only because the Decor Group option was selected. That option also includes the decklid trim between the taillights. Magnum 500 “star mags” on Coker Firestone Wide Oval redline tires take you right back to 1968. The engine is decked out in its correct turquoise blue paint. No power steering, no power brakes, no air conditioning — nothing that could add unnecessary weight or steal horsepower from the rear wheels. Just the same, the engine compartment is neat and clean and looks much as it did when new. The same goes for the trunk. It’s very tidy, and is complete with a jack, a new matching spare tire, and trunk mats. With its beep-beep horn and Road Runner cartoon logo, the car was such a sensation when introduced, that it was awarded the coveted title of 1968 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Motor Trend called it “the most brazenly pure, non-compromising super car in history…its simplicity is a welcome virtue.” The term “muscle car” was coined a few years later. Consumer Guide said, “After the ‘64 GTO, the Road Runner is the most significant muscle car.” Some might contend that the Mopar is number one. In any case, this 1968 Plymouth Road Runner 383 Pillared Coupe is a historically significant classic in its most quintessential configuration. You can see it sitting still at Maxmotive. The Coyote couldn’t catch it.
