Vehicle Description

He’s been called “The Camaro Man.” His record of racing and winning with Camaros is long and impressive. He has also owned, driven, and shown numerous Camaros since the ‘70s. Pittsburgh’s Jim Boburka is a two-time NHRA Super Stock World Champion and the 1980 NHRA U.S. Nationals Super Stock Champion. The U.S. Nationals, NHRA’s most prestigious event, is held in Indianapolis. Jim first competed at Indy in 1970. When the opportunity arises to acquire a car from the collection of a professional so experienced and knowledgeable of the marque, savvy collectors and enthusiasts are quick to respond. Maxmotive is delighted to present this award-winning 1969 Camaro Convertible because it truly is of the caliber one might expect from a builder with Jim’s credentials. Furthermore, he appreciates the value of the car. As a 1969 Camaro Convertible, this is one of the most sought-after and desirable models in the world. So it retains all of its iconic exterior features including the correct front and rear spoilers, cowl-induction hood, and the Rally Sport hideaway headlights. But the headlight doors were converted to electric operation for smooth, reliable performance. The build is a thorough rotisserie restoration with perfectly gap-fitted and detailed body panels and a killer paint job. A crowd-pleasing car needs a killer paint job. This one is no wallflower with searing Corvette Millenium Yellow to feast your eyes on. Original style black SS stripes were painted on, then the car was clear-coated and polished to a glass-like luster. It has all new chrome trim, weather strips and body seals, with new tinted glass all around. The engineering and execution provide one pleasant surprise after another. With all the tech, you’ll find that the car operates and behaves like a 2020 model. The inner body panels were insulated and fitted with sound deadeners, while the wiring was replaced with custom harnesses to accommodate state of the art electronics that operate the remote controlled entry system, interior lighting, and alarm. Electronics also control fuel injection and transmission functions. Now, being a racer, you wouldn’t expect Jim to own a car that’s all show and no go. So what does “Mr. Camaro” do for a drivetrain? How about a GM Corporate High-Performance 350 cubic inch (5.7L) LS1 with Black Label fuel injection by Mast Performance? While the fuel system uses the original type tank, it has been upgraded to handle the pressure requirements of the fuel injection. The system includes an Aeromotive A1000 electric fuel pump and filter with high performance steel braided lines throughout. To light the mixture, an OEM late-model electronic ignition system does the job, along with a Mallory crank trigger for precision timing. Custom-built ceramic-coated headers feed polished stainless pipes and low-restriction mufflers, and the exhaust exits forward of the rear wheels through special side outlets. Drag racers know the value of a good automatic. So Jim installed a refurbished GM 4L60E electronically controlled overdrive transmission with an ATI convertor and a heavy duty cast oil pan. A custom built lightweight drive shaft with heavy duty yokes and joints connects the tranny to a 12-bolt Posi rear with 3.71 gears, custom Superior heavy duty drive axles, and a cast alloy rear housing cover. Broken parts will not spoil the fun with this car! The undercarriage has been thoughtfully re-engineered. The builders were careful to retain the original Camaro structure, yet all the accessories and suspension have been upgraded with the finest components available. The original subframe was modified to accept factory late-model power rack and pinion steering, Global West tubular upper and lower control arms, plus QA1 coilovers and front sway bar. The rear suspension features the original type leaf springs with Edelbrock coilovers, while the brakes are GM production parts from a late-model Corvette. Billet Specialties wheels are a worthy addition. These beauties are forged and polished, appropriate for a build of this quality. While the mechanicals are all-business drag racing grade components, the interior is comfy and downright luxurious. Yes, the entire dash is Auto Meter white face gauges including the tach and a speedometer. But the seats are power-operated leather buckets, and the steering wheel is a leather wrapped billet Lacerra piece on a tilt column. A familiar stalk control operates the cruise control and delay wipers. A Pontiac Firebird provided the center console with a leather-wrapped shifter and switches for the power windows, — and yes — a power trunk lid. The rear-view mirror features automatic day/night dimming, outside temp readout, and compass. Tunes come via an in-dash Alpine AM/FM/CD unit with XM satellite capability. Two subwoofers in the trunk pump out the bass and a series of premium speakers are hidden throughout the interior. Even the trunk is insulated and upholstered to match the interior. Another internationally famous Camaro expert and Super Stock star, Canada’s Wally Clark, had this to say about this top-notch 1969 Camaro Convertible. “The underside, engine compartment, and interior have all been detailed and finished in a manner that complements its flawless external appearance. In general . . . this is an outstanding retro version of a desirable original factory-produced high-performance convertible that utilizes only the finest of available products and has been assembled with exceptional detail that includes the use of ceramic-coated, chrome-plated, and stainless steel hardware throughout.” This is indeed an exciting opportunity to acquire a classic car that is truly “done right.” Give us a call. We’re excited to tell you more about it.
