Vehicle Description

Maxmotive is now the “Sign of the Cat!” The Cougar was such a central part of Mercury’s marketing as the auto market transitioned to the ‘70s, that “Sign of the Cat” became their slogan. 1970 was the zenith of American horsepower, and this Cat is a prime example. Under the hood is the 351 Cleveland V8. This is one engine that could boast of true race track performance. It garnered many a victory for Ford on NASCAR banked ovals and as a killer drag strip combination in NHRA Pro Stock. The secret is the canted valve heads, which make the motor easily distinguishable from its 351 Windsor stablemate. It’s also a great option for the Cougar, as the engine brings what made it a winner on the track to the street. Its relatively light weight enhances handling, while 300 horsepower provides strong straight line performance. The huge valves make the Cleveland a great platform for hop ups. This one has a big Quick Fuel double pumper atop an Edelbrock intake. Finned aluminum valve covers, a custom low-restriction air cleaner, and steel braided hoses throughout are also in keeping with the hot rod spirit. The interior, however, emphasizes the Cougar’s plush sport/luxury image. A rich, well-equipped interior features an inviting combination of sportiness and comfort. On the sport side, the dash is a standout. Factory gauges including a beautiful, clearly legible tachometer greet the driver. Between the comfy bucket seats, a full center console houses the factory floor shifter with a comfortable T-handle. On the luxury side, there’s factory air conditioning, power windows, and an upgraded stereo with controls neatly installed in the stock location. Power steering and power front disc brakes were standard. This Cougar has been treated to a comprehensive Eliminator makeover. Black stripes on the hood and on the sides accompany the “Eliminator” logos on the quarter panels. The famous Larry Shinoda designed rear wing is here. First seen on the Boss 302, it became part of FoMoCo’s special performance packages such as the Mustang Mach 1, Torino Talladega, and Mercury Cyclone Spoiler. The correct front air dam is present as well, along with the big hood scoop shared with Cobra Jet Cougars. Period-appropriate American Torq-Thrust wheels with white letter radials fit the image perfectly. All in all, this 1970 Mercury Cougar Convertible Eliminator tribute is an exciting package. So let it be. It’s a potent blend of style, performance, luxury, and that important factor on cruise nights or at shows – uniqueness. So get ready. You can’t go wrong with a classic convertible on cruise night, and here is a well-respected and rare car from the height of the muscle car era. This is your vehicle, baby.
