Vehicle Description

The concept of a Ford V8 in a European sports car gave us the Cobra. That went well. Here we have a 1972 deTomaso Pantera, which is a true monocoque mid-engine Italian exotic with a touch of hot rod. A 351 Cleveland 4-bolt main engine provides torquey performance that can still reach 6000 rpm when called upon to do so. The gearbox gurus at ZF provided a 5-speed transaxle, which is an exceptionally handsome transmission. A full view and easy access is granted through the generous rear hatch. Here you’ll also find the u-joints, the radiator, and the electric cooling fan. The design comes from the world-famous Ghia studios. Like many exotic road cars, race cars, and aircraft, the Pantera is built with a monocoque construction, first seen in Formula 1 cars, to provide the necessary strength and stiffness with lighter weight. The suspension, not the car, should do the flexing. The fully independent suspension features coilover shocks at each corner plus unequal length A-arms, stabilizer bars, and manual rack and pinion steering. Magnificent chrome 10 spoke wheels with spinners complete the handling package. These look spectacular with the staggered Michelin Pilot Sport tires. 225/45ZR17s do the steering and abbondanza 335/35ZR17s putting the power to the pavement. Beautiful metallic orange paint is a striking complement to the wheels, and is a perfect choice to underscore the ultra performance, sporting nature of this car. Up front are the desirable split chrome bumpers. Sporting Italian ambiance continues in abundance on the inside as well. Black leather sport seats flank a center console with a familiar chrome horizontal gate shifter. An impressive array of Veglia analog gauges score high in both form and function. The mileage is in the sweet spot at 60191. It means that this special car has been enjoyed, but sparingly; and has not been subject to the dangerous scenario of too much stationary time.
