Description

What was the fastest production vehicle available in 1991? If you said GMC Syclone, you are correct. Here’s a great opportunity to own a historic performance vehicle that has been driven less than 2200 miles. Less than 3000 were built. The 4.3 liter turbocharged V6 is larger and more powerful that even that on the Buick Grand National. A high performance fuel system and engine oil cooler are serious performance hardware. It also has a high capacity transmission cooling package for the 4-speed automatic. With all-wheel drive and a limited slip differential, the Syclone will launch with nearly anything, classic or modern. The truck gained notoriety from articles, particularly the September 1991 issue of Car & Driver, describing an impromptu matchup between a Syclone and a new Ferrari 348ts, and guess who wins. This limited production, rules bending hot rod, brought the hardware to lay claim as the fastest production vehicle of 1991, the only year it was produced, (although some sources say 3 were built in 1992). In addition to the turbo, the engine also has a Garrett water/air intercooler. This vehicle was ahead of its time! It ran through a 700R4 automatic. Smart move, as a clutch would likely have a short life with this much power and the tenacious grip of all-wheel drive. It also has a high capacity transmission cooling package. The Borg-Warner transfer case is tuned to send 65% of the torque to the rear axle, and 35% to the front. The suspension has been set up for superior handling too. The Syclone package comes with a unique front facia and ground effects, graphics and a dedicated interior package with red piping. It was ahead of its time in the content department as well. This Syclone is adorned with power steering, power anti-lock brakes, power windows, locks, air conditioning, cruise control, and premium stereo. The special instrumentation includes not only a tach, but also a turbo boost gauge. The Syclone is the forerunner of the performance truck and SUV trend that persists today. So it’s collectible. Even Jay Leno has owned one. To take full advantage of the power and handling capabilities of the truck, it’s been fitted with ZR1 wheels and massive 275mm performance tires all around. The original aluminum wheels were unique to the Syclone and they are included with the original tires.
