Truly one of those, you can’t build it for what you can buy it for cars. This iconic Mopar was treated to her body modifications first. This included at the time headlights, tail lights, and door mirrors to be grafted into the 1970 Challenger body from a modern Challenger. The door handles have been shaved, and electric door poppers open the doors via a programmed key fob. The car was showcased at SEMA for it’s body modifications. After the car returned home from the show, the owner enjoyed and drove the car with the body modifications complete. He then quickly realized, when a car looks this good, it needs to have the power to back up those looks! The car was sent to esteemed Cleveland Power & Performance in Ohio for its fabrication and mechanical upgrades. The original driveline at the time was removed, and the interior of the car was stripped down to a bone.

The entire Challenger was professionally wired. All four door glasses were treated to a power window conversion, and the gaps were then adjusted for the fit you see now on the Challenger. The tunnel was professionally modified to fit the modern Hemi Nag-1 5 speed auto transmission. The seat tracks of the modern Challenger were modified, and the floor sunk to allow more headroom for the modern Challenger seats. The interior floor then had sound deadener added before the carpet was installed. The Challenger was prepped, and professionally painted with a rubberized undercoating to help protect against heat, help reduce road noise, and keep the underside protected against rock chips. Under the hood, a modern 6.4 SRT-8 Hemi was installed. The driveline has a documented 13,000 miles on the engine and transmission. New aftermarket transmission cooler and a new aftermarket power steering cooler was added as well. New aluminum radiator to keep the engine cool, and vintage air inside the cabin to keep the occupants cool. TTI headers were professionally modified and TIG welded for proper clearance. A custom stainless 304 exhaust was fabricated with Kooks mufflers handling the sound. A new carbon fiber driveshaft transfers the power to the rear axle. Stainless steel fuel tank, with new stainless steel fuel and new brake lines were custom bent and routed on the underside. Wilwood brakes are neatly tucked behind 2 piece aluminum Forgiato 22” rims. Adjustable Ridetech coil overs handle stance and performance at each corner. Inside the Challenger, a custom ordered and made Dakota Digital gauge monitors speed and RPM’s.. The gauge also can be color adjusted by the operator. Kenwood head unit, JL speakers throughout, highlighted by 4 JL subwoofers in the parcel shelf, powered by 3 JL amps in the trunk. Dyno tuned, and over 1,900 test/enjoyment miles since the mechanical build was completed. This totally one of a kind Challenger is ready for it’s next home.

Remember any reputable shop is booked out over a year plus. When you add the cost of body work, paint materials, alllllllllllllllllll of the aftermarket parts, the 6.4 HEMI driveline, and the labor to properly install allllllllllllll of those aftermarket parts, do not hesitate on this black beauty. It was completed in 2020 and driven 2952 miles since. The beautiful paint is Montero Red base with five coats of clear. Under the hood is a .030 over, balanced and blueprinted 409 by Bill Kell Racing Engines in Chester WV. It’s loaded with Ross 10:1 forged pistons and an Isky solid cam. On top are two Edelbrock carbs and Edelbrock aluminum heads. They feed into Doug’s Ceramic-coated headers and a 2.5-inch dual exhaust system. The 409 sends its ample power through a 700R4 automatic transmission with a 2400 stall converter to a new US Gear posi rear with 3.70 gears. Tubular A-arms and a HD front sway bar update the handling nicely along with new rear springs, power steering, and power front disc brakes with hydro boost master. It rides on Cragar Street Star chrome wheels and staggered Goodyear touring tires. Striking due to its complete ground up build, correct 1970 Hemi block, Crossram intake, deep gloss black finish, and generous helpings of chrome throughout the undercarriage and engine room. It has been driven just 84 miles since completion and comes with more than 150 photos of the ground-up build process. Plenty of fuel is delivered through twin Holley four barrels and the exhaust exits via coated headers and a simply gorgeous full length exhaust system. One step on the throttle demonstrates emphatically that the combination is dialed in. Power is transmitted through a TorqueFlite automatic with a reverse manual valve body and Hurst Pistol Grip shifter to a Dana 60 Sure Grip rear axle housing 3.73 gears. A custom hood accommodates the Elephant motor’s height with the Crossram setup. The interior is strikingly plush featuring a factory style air conditioning system, leather bucket seats as well as leather door trim, center console with wood grain appliques, and a wood grain rally dash with tach and clock. An AM/FM audio system with Bluetooth has been added too.

The original sheet metal has been treated to some deep gloss black paint, and that’s complemented by chrome Foose wheels. With this much power on tap, the brakes need to be up to the task. The open five spoke wheel design shows off the Wilwood brakes with drilled and slotted rotors. Open the cowl-scooped hood to see the authentic Snowflake intake and heads from the Winters Foundry – the source of the original ZL-1 components. Based on the original tooling, the block is a newer improved version, part # 12370850 from GM Racing, made from 356-T6M aluminum alloy, featuring 4-bolt splayed steel main caps, and weighing a svelte 110 lbs. Built and dynoed by Grimes Automotive Machine in Alpharetta GA, the dyno sheet is included along with receipts for the build. The car has been driven approximately 2600 miles since completion.
