Description

By 1971, the GTO was well established as a living musclecar legend and one of Pontiac’s best-ever cars. The legend continued with a restyled GTO for ‘71. The original, numbers matching 455 4 barrel V8 powers this highly optioned and very desirable example. In addition to the optional engine, the car was special ordered with the Turbo Hydro automatic transmission, variable ratio power steering, power front disc brakes, 15-inch Rallye 2 wheels, AM/FM radio, rear window defogger, center console, tinted glass, and more. A classic becomes even more appealing when its colors and styling match current tastes, and this one sure does. The original black on black color scheme and the famous Judge-style rear spoiler present a look that is sought after in many new performance cars. The big 455 was rebuilt, the transmission was rebuilt, and the paint was freshened about 6000 miles ago, so the car looks and runs great. It drives great too, thanks to new brakes and rotors, new shocks, and new axle bearings and seals. The GTO interior looks splendid with its woodgrain dash, 3-spoke wheel, and bucket seats; and this one has the optional rally gauges and clock. The interior was freshened up too, treated to new seat covers and carpeting, not to mention a new Hurst Dual/Gate shifter. This unit saw duty in such cars as the Hurst/Olds and looks and feels right at home in this Goat. For purists, the original shifter comes with the car. Another cool item that’s included is the original 8-track player. It’s great to see lots of clues that this car was ordered, owned, and maintained by people who knew and loved the GTO. For example the car currently sports an Optima AGM battery, a K&N oil filter, locks on all four wheels, MSD wires, and staggered-size BFGoodrich T/A radials – 215’s in the front, and meaty 275/50R15’s in back. A veritable encyclopedia of documentation from the Pontiac Historical Society accompanies the car. It tells us that only 534 GTOs were built in 1971 with the optional 455 4-barrel engine and the optional Turbo 400 automatic. Fewer still in black on black. Here’s a great opportunity for you to own and drive a truly special, highly desirable, and collectible automobile.
