Fewer than 2000 Checker Marathons are said to exist today, due to their heavy duty work, famously as New York City taxicabs. This example was originally a personal vehicle of the president of the Yellow Cab Company, and has been preserved as an important part of automotive history. Marathon is an appropriate name for a vehicle with a truck-like body on frame construction and drivetrain components designed for high performance vehicles and trucks. The Turbo 400 automatic transmission and Dana 60 rear end are more than a match for the thrifty Chevrolet inline 6. Long hours of operation are easier with power steering and power front disc brakes. Actual taxi equipment including the Rockwell fare meter and Motorola two-way radio remain on board. The paint is Yellow Cab Yellow with authentic taxicab graphics. The cab rides on fresh Hankook white stripe radials. Many have asked for a no-frills car designed for durability. From 1961 to 1982 that car was the Checker Marathon.
